The reason why OG is auspicious

1. Widening shape towards the end

In Japan, the "tip-broadening" shape has been regarded as highly auspicious for a long time. This form gradually widens towards the tip, symbolizing the spreading of positivity into the future, signifying eternal growth, prosperity, and flourishing. On celebratory occasions, a specific type of folding fan known as "Suehiro" is often utilized. The name "Suehiro" originates from its auspicious shape, characterized by the graceful widening design.

2. As a symbol of happiness and prosperity

OG, a tool originating during Japan's Heian period (794 to 1185), found its way into the imperial court and adorned the hands of aristocratic women, becoming a vibrant decorative accessory. While it was initially exclusive to nobility and not yet commonplace, this exclusivity led to the notion of folding fans symbolizing happiness and prosperity, eventually evolving into lucky charms associated with good fortune.

3. Significance as a sacred object

OG has been employed in sacred dances dedicated to the gods, wherein prayers were offered for good health and abundant harvests. Another theory suggests that the folding fan used in these dances was believed to possess sacred power, transforming it into a lucky charm. Moreover, OG plays a significant role in tea ceremonies, where a tea fan is positioned in front of one's knees, serving as a symbolic boundary to convey deep respect to the other party.
